Aging Worker Initiative Services Now Available in West Central Indiana

The Aging Worker Initiative (AWI) is an innovative approach to expand services for seasoned workers (55 years +) in the West Central Indiana workforce region. The program is funded for three years by the Department of Labor through a competitive grant process as part of the High Growth Job Training Initiative. Tecumseh Area Partnership, Inc. received one of ten grants awarded across the to develop and provide these services.  The funded project is intended to address the workforce challenges facing mature workers in areas of talent development, training, employment and job retention. Efforts are focused on connecting older workers to jobs in high growth, high demand industries critical to the regional economy. The two specific purposes of the regional initiative are to match qualified older workers with good paying jobs and increase the value employers place on experienced older workers.

Aging Worker Specialists, specifically trained to work with individuals 55 and older are available in the Lafayette WorkOne Center and the Kokomo WorkOne Center . The Specialists serve as case mangers for program participants. They coordinate appropriate assessments, training, education, workshops, affinity and networking groups as well as other special services available through the AWI program.

Maturity Matters Business Employer Award
As stated in the 2009 regional State of the Workforce Report for West Central Indiana, "to date, labor market needs, by broad occupational category, are largely being met because the mature-age group continues to work." In recognition of employers who understand the value mature workers bring to the West Central Indiana workforce, Tecumseh Area Partnership, Inc. (TAP, Inc.) is initiating the first annual Maturity Matters Employer Award. The award will be presented to an outstanding regional employer who values mature workers as exemplified by: recruiting and investing in them, practicing age neutral policies, offering flexibility to employees and promoting continual learning. The award will be presented at TAP, Inc.'s annual meeting on Tuesday, November 16, 2010. Nomination detals will be available September 30, 2010.

Demographic studies conducted within the region, comprised of Benton, Carroll, Cass, Clinton, Fountain, Fulton, Howard, Miami, Montgomery, Tippecanoe, Tipton, Wabash, Warren, and White counties in north central/west central Indiana, point to the fact that our already maturing population will continue to grow and dominate our economic and cultural enviornment. This knowledge has guided us to the premise that maturity and the issues related to it really DO matter!
